The 250 Microsprint Sensation
Microsprints started in
Australia
in the early 1980’s as a non-winged class of racing and have
evolved to closely resemble their big brother, the Sprintcar.
Microsprints are one of the largest divisions of speedway
racing in the USA as they are affordable and
provide a real life sensation of driving and working on a
real race car.
They are powered by 2 stroke motor bike engine with the open
class running methanol.
Microsprints have
provided good proving ground for such drivers as Mark Richards,
Michael Matchett, Darren Jensen and current Aussie Microsprint
champ
Troy
Little all race Sprintcars. Former multi Australian Production
sedan champion and now Sprintcar Driver Peter Lack has owned and
raced a Microsprint.
Why are they so popular? Simple they offer a great entry level
value into speedway and more races are won because the drive has
learnt to be smooth to maintain maximum speed. Add the fact all
you need is a Ute or box trailer to get to your favourite venue
to be able to go racing.
And just as important is the great friendships made due to the
fact everyone helps everyone, as we all had to start some where.
Microsprints have two classes that allow the beginner on a
budget to enter the limited class or allow a driver to up grade
and run in the open class as a long term speedway career.
Microsprints are
fast
but they are even faster in the driver’s seat, capable
speeds of 120k’s plus on the ¼ mile tracks.
The suspension set up on most cars is torsion bar rear and coil
over front as this gives them the best handling and set ups for
a small car. So popular is the class that Steve Smith
Motorsports Publishing has written a book on Microsprint basic
set up to help cater for the demand for knowledge.
Most cars have all the light weight gear such as ultra light
seats and aluminium rear axles and follow strict safety to
ensure everyone is a safe as possible, to enjoy their racing.
If you have ever thought about racing and didn’t know where to
start why not ask one of the Microsprint guys or girls even if
all you would like to do is be involved at a closer level.
Microsprints have there own web site that is linked to all the
other great speedway sites and divisions. Plus is a great source
for regular up to date information.
